CONGRATULATIONS TEXSYN MEMBERS

The TEXSYN ( Texas State Youth Network) members of the Boys and Girls Club of Falls County just completed their twelve week SMART MOVES prevention program. This program aims to provide young people with the knowledge, skills, self-esteem and peer support to help them achieve the following:

Avoid using alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs
Avoid involvement in other drug-related activities, such as drunk driving and drug trafficking.
Postpone Sexual Activity to avoid the risks of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
“This program is effective because it provides members with accurate information about the consequences of risky behavior, information to correct assumptions, sensitization to media and social influences that promote risky behavior, training on how to communicate clearly and refuse temptation, Experimental learning- such as games, role plays, skill practice and small group discussions- rather than classroom lectures or scare tactics” says Mrs. Lopez, Volunteer Program Leader.

The members celebrated their success on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 with a certificate ceremony and a hot dog dinner.

Girls Grooves has gone Green.

In an effort to help the environment and the community, the Girls Grooves Group along with their sponsor Mrs. Lopez have taken it upon themselves to clean up Falcon Park once a month. The girls organized a group meeting in the park, however upon arrival found the park to be untidy and in need of a clean sweep. The group that started in 2007 with only 8 members has quickly become the most popular gender specific program for girls ages 10-15 at the Boys and Girls Club and has grown in size to over 15. If you would like information about this program or would like to volunteer please contact the Boys and Girls Club of Falls County.

Texsyn Leadership Group
(Texas Statewide Youth Services Network)

This group of young leaders attend weekly meetings where they are taught a broad spectrum of social and personal competence skills to help youths identify and resist peer and other social pressures to smoke, drink, and engage in sexual activity.
